Corks, Caps & Closures

This section covers the many ways of closing your wine, beer and champagne bottles.
The success of your brewing depends on the use of the correct type of closure at the bottling stage.
The right cork, shrink and label really makes the difference to the appearance of the bottle.
Straight Corks (12)
The straight cork is the best method of corking a wine bottle. It forms a perfect seal, keeping the wine in and the air out. Bottles should be stored on their side to keep the cork damp. These corks must be put in with a corker. Please do not boil or soak these corks - if a cork is soaked then it takes in water which later when it has dried out will shrink, allowing wine to dribble out and worse allowing air into the bottle causing oxidisation of the wine. They will just require a quick swill with steriliser followed by a rinse in cold water just before use.
